Habit Tips to Live By - 3 Tiny Habits® to Create More Happiness in Life
These habits may seem small, but they are MIGHTY in terms of impact on your life. Each takes about 10 seconds to do. So in a total of 30 seconds a day, you can cultivate 3 habits that dramatically improve the quality of your life.
1. The Maui Habit - developed by Dr. BJ Fogg, author of Tiny Habits®, the Maui Habit (he lives in Hawaii) is all about creating a positive mindset when you first wake up. To do it, simply find an activity you already do first thing in the morning and then say "It's going to be a great day." Then, to ingrain the new habit into your brain, you need to celebrate in some way, whether that's smiling, a fist pump in the air, or even just the thought of "great job starting the day with positivity."
Example - After I sit up in bed in the morning, I will say "It's going to be a great day" and I will give myself a thumbs up.
2. Deep Breathing - while meditation is great, it can be hard to sit still and focus only on breathing for an extended period of time. Sometimes it really can be just as simple as taking 3 deep breaths and the fact that there are only 3 makes it much easier to focus on the breath and nothing else. Deep breathing calms the nervous system and can set us up for a great day.
Example - After I sit down at my desk in the morning, I will close my eyes and take 3 deep breaths, focusing on how the air feels going in and out of my nose and I will celebrate with a smile.
3. Nightime Gratitude Habit - just like starting the day with a positive habit, you can end the day with one too. Think of 1 thing you are grateful for that happened that day and then 1 thing you are looking forward to the next day. These things ruminate in your subconscious overnight leading to more pleasant dreams and a sense of peace.
Example - After my head hits the pillow at night I will think of 1 thing I am grateful for that happened during the day and 1 thing I am looking forward to the next day and I will thank myself for noticing the good things.
